Snowbird? What you need to know about travel insurance

Kerri Westenbergat from the Star Tribune recently started a conversation with our Director of Customer Service, Mike Griffin, about the potential options for snowbirds looking for travel insurance as they head south for the winter.  She felt there are three problems with insuring this type of trip. Mike was able to explain how insurance could be applied, but one big question really stuck with us…

Can I insure my snowbird trip?

Most travel insurance plans are designed to protect vacations or trips that fall within a window of 2-30 days. As you may or may not know, the longer a trip, the thinner the number of available plans. But that doesn’t mean you are without a solution, so please do not lose hope!

It’s the uncertainty of your return date that can throw a wrench into things.

“You’ll be required to give travel dates when requesting a travel insurance quote,” Griffin shared. “And for some snowbirds, that could be a problem. Often times they return when the weather is better, and don’t necessarily have a commitment to a set date.”

The good news is that you can return earlier than the insured date! If you know for a fact that you will be home for your granddaughters April 25th birthday, then use that as your return date.

Mike continued to add, “Often times we see customers travel to a ‘second-home,’ a condo or a timeshare. This can be complicated, and possibly not insurable by travel insurance. However, travel medical plans, lost or delayed baggage concerns and insuring costs of flights may still be an option.”

As always, you can always talk to an InsureMyTrip licensed travel insurance expert to see what plans are available for your unique trip. Now get out there and dodge those snowflakes!
