6 Unique Spa Experiences While Traveling

Traveling is about experiencing new things, even if sometimes you are initially a little put off by them. This can come in a variety of ways: food, cultural customs or even spa treatments. People sometimes go the extreme to relax, revitalize and rejuvenate while traveling. But does that mean it’s less successful than the traditional deep tissue massage? That’s for you to decide – we just give you the tools to step out of your comfort zone.

One of our favorite authors on FoxNews.com, Julie Loffredi, pulled together some of the most unique spa treatments around the world to heal your mind, body and soul.

Hammer Treatment – Lake Austin Spa, Austin, Texas

The Manaka Tapping treatment, also known as the Hammer Treatment, can seem a bit barbaric, but its origin does back to ancient times. It lasts 50 minutes and involves softly tapping acupressure points with a wooden hammer and peg. It combines acupuncture, herbology and a little bit of carpentry to help guests unwind. The treatment is aimed to relax the body and calm the mind. (Photo Credit: Lake Austin Spa)

Eye Butter Bath – Ananda Spa, Narendranagar, India

If you struggle with tired, dry eyes while traveling, or in general, this eye treatment may be excellent for you. The Tarpana treatment, commonly referred to as the Eye Butter Bath, is supposed to have a cooling effect on irritated and stressed eyes. The technician will place a dough ring around the eyeballs and then pour a medicated ghee (clarified butter) over the eyes. Before the fluid is drained from the dough ring, the guest is asked to blink a few times to allow the fluid to reach the eye. The treatment is aimed to relieve eyestrain, improve eyesight and improve eye disorders. (Photo Credit: Flickr/Day Fox)

Aura Wrap – The Omni Grove Park Inn, Asheville, N.C.

For travelers looking to rebalance their mind and body, the Color and Light Wrap with Aura Imaging treatment may help them. A photo is taken with an aura imaging camera to show energies and auras in the guest, and then the spa designs a treatment to help “adjust the aura” to make it more balanced. Treatment includes an exfoliation and detoxifying clay body wrap and music, light, heat and aroma therapies. (Photo Credit : The Omni Grove Park Inn)

Blood Type Treatment – Cool Spa at Sri Panwa, Phuket, Thailand

Looking for a spa treatment that truly is more than skin deep? The Blood Type Therapy is a series of body scrubs, masks and massages designed specifically for the guest’s blood type. The spa treatment changes depending on your blood type (A, B, AB or O). For example, guests with a blood type A get a deep stress massage to target underlying tension and a body scrub to encourage circulation. This treatment is geared to relaxing the guest in the most natural way. (Photo Credit: Flickr/Andrew Mason)

Bird Poo Facial – Shizuka New York Day Spa, New York City

Yes – bird poop. A top New York day spa, Shizuka, made headlines in 2013 for this treatment. It involves sanitizing powdered nightingale droppings, mixing them with Japanese rice bean and applying it to the face. It has now been trademarked as the Geisha Facial; the one hour treatment is still very popular in the location. The facial aims to brighten and rejuvenate the skin. (Photo Credit: Shizuka)

Talking Tree Treatment – Spa at The Boulders Resort, Carefree, Ariz.

If massages and blood type treatments just don’t meet your needs to stress relief, you’ll probably be looking for some more mental ways to relieve stress. In this spa experience, the guest books a one-hour reading with the spa’s resident shamon, in which they will learn how to create balance and live a better life. They also “listen to a tree” to gain insight on how to de-stress naturally. This experience will help the guest to learn how to destress on their own in the future.
