The data clearly points to:

  • Shorter vacations: While all travel is down in 2009, extended holidays of two to four weeks saw the largest decline at nearly 15%.
  • Cost-conscious travel: The number of trips costing more than $2,000 fell by 25%. Overall, average trip costs decreased 12%.
  • Compressed planning: Travel insurance consumers are purchasing coverage closer to their departure date. On average, insurance is now purchased 62 days before departure, a decrease of 11%.
  • Longer stays, more protection:  In a separate InsureMyTrip survey, customers noted insuring 68% of trips lasting eight days or more, whereas 30% of week-long trips and just 18% of weekend trips were protected.
